Königstein Fortress rises majestically above the Elbe River. Covering 9.5 hectares, Königstein Fortress is one of the most popular places to visit in Saxony. It is only 13 km from the Czech-Saxon border. This massive table mountain in the early Middle Ages belonged to the Czech Kingdom. It is an attractive tourist destination in the middle of the bizarre landscape of Saxon Switzerland.

There are two lifts and a car park nearby. This makes it easy to "conquer" the fortress. Situated on a rocky plateau 247 metres above the Elbe River, you'll find more than 50 different buildings bearing witness to past centuries, including Germany's oldest preserved barracks (1589/90), Saxony's first garrison church (1676) and Saxony's deepest well (152.5 metres). There are fascinating views of the Elbe valley, Saxon Switzerland and the edge of the eastern part of the Krušné Mountains on the 1.7km walk along the fortress walls.

It would be best if you allowed at least two hours to visit the Königstein Fortress. Almost all means of transport can reach the fortress. Travelling along the River Elbe is particularly romantic. You can arrive on a historic paddle steamer of the Saxon Steam Navigation Company. The fortress is well-equipped for English tourists. The website is fully translated into English. An information leaflet, a map and a guide to Königstein Fortress are also available in English. Also popular are the English audio guides.
